Some 9km south of George and 3km off the N2 lies
VICTORIA BAY , one of the gems of the Garden Route. The bay contains a small sandy beach wedged into a cove between cliffs, with a grassy sunbathing area, safe swimming and a tidal pool. During the December holidays it's filled with day-trippers, and also rates as one of the top
surfing spots in South Africa. Best of all, because of the cliffs there's only a single row of houses along the beachfront, with some of the most dreamily positioned guesthouses along the coast.
There's no public transport to Victoria Bay, although many people hitch the few kilometres from the N2. Arriving by car , you'll encounter a metal barrier as you drop down the hill to the bay, and you'll have to try and park in a car park that's frequently full (especially in summer). If you're staying at one of the B&Bs, leave your car at the barrier and collect the key from your lodgings to gain access to the private beach road. The only place to buy food is a small beachside kiosk selling light refreshments and unexciting snacks. However, the resort's B&Bs are served by Mr Delivery, a service that will collect from about ten fast-food joints in George and will also fetch your groceries and even a video.
