Popular with tourist coaches,
CULLINAN lies 50km east of Pretoria. It was in the town's Premier Mine, still working today, that the world's largest diamond, the 3106-carat Star of Africa was discovered in 1905. The De Beers mine dominates the small town, but the oldest buildings, many from the turn of the century, are being used to cater to the swarms of tourists. Unless you take a
surface tour of the mine (Mon-Fri 10am & 2.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am; R30), there isn't much to do other than wander around, though a couple of pleasant places to
eat include the
Station Restaurant in the old railway station and the
Lemon Tree tea garden on Oak Avenue. You can
stay at
The Oak House (tel 012 734 0083; R200-300), Cullinan's second-oldest building, attractively set on Oak Avenue, leading up to the mine.
