The
southern districts of the country can't match for sheer scale the mountains of north and central Lesotho, but they nevertheless hold some dramatic countryside which is relatively easy to tour around. There is a reasonable network of tar roads linking a number of small towns, some based around missions founded by the British in the last century -
Malealea , famous for its welcoming lodge and excellent pony trekking, is probably the most handsomely situated,
Morija the most historic. Further south, you can see
dinosaur footprints at
Mohale's Hoek and, more accessibly, at
Moyeni , before moving on east to
Qacha's Nek and the isolated delights of the
Sehlabathebe National Park beyond: Lesotho's only national park, but so remote as to make visits here a true adventure.
