The route north from Maseru right the way round to Sani Pass takes in the best of both Lesotho's lowlands and highlands, from the wind-carved sandstone hills on the way to
Teya-Teyaneng , a hill town famed for its woven crafts, to the epic mountain passes of the "Roof of Africa route" that runs from
Butha-Buthe to the ramshackle town of
Mokhotlong and on to Sani. There are a number of intriguing, out-of-the-way sights along the way, like the remarkable
cave houses at Mateka, the
rock art at Lipofung and the winter
skiing runs near Oxbow. You'll find plenty of reasonable places to stay (though some take a little finding), particularly in the Highlands, where a succession of well-located lodges make perfect bases for hiking in the surrounding mountain countryside. A new attraction is the
Katse reservoir , completed in 1997, which collects water from Lesotho's south-flowing rivers, thanks to a 185-metre dam wall. The road from Butha-Buthe is tarred all the way to Mokhotlong, deep amongst Lesotho's (and southern Africa's) highest mountains. A dirt road leads to the
Sani Pass , a dramatic winding road down the western reaches of the mighty Drakensberg into South Africa.
