Jerusalem Street Names

In Jerusalem, and especially the Old City, street names often have several variations, due to different ways of translating or transliterating them from Hebrew or Arabic. Thus the Jaffa Road, translated in Hebrew as Rehov Yafo, is sometimes translated back as "Jaffa Street", or even "Yafo Street". The Street of the Prophets, Rehov HaNeviim in Hebrew, is now generally referred to as HaNeviim Street, while Chain Gate Street, Tariq Bab al-Silsila in Arabic, is usually called Bab al-Silsila Street. Other streets have been renamed since independence - for example, St Paul's Road, now Shivtei Israel Street.

The result of all this is that different maps give different names for the same street. We have tried to be as consistent as possible, using the English name if there is one in common usage. Otherwise we've used the Hebrew or Arabic, though using "street" rather than "rehov", "sharia" or "tariq"
