Ramparts Walk
Before plunging into the maze-like
alleys and bustling souqs of the Old
City, take the Ramparts Walk tour around
the walls; you'll get a breathtaking
overview of some of the world's holiest
sites.
Via Dolorosa
Don't let the bars, falafel stands and
souvenir shops lining the Via Dolorosa (the
Way of the Cross) make you stray from
the path - join the throngs of tourists
and pilgrims along the route Christ took
on the day of the crucifixion.
Philadelphia
Though the Philadelphia
restaurant is expensive, you get to try
unusual concoctions here, such as red
mullet and meat in lemon juice and a
garlic sesame seed paste; you may also
spot a movie star - many are known to
dine here when in town.
Dome of the Rock
Its landmark golden dome and exquisite
mosaic and stained-glass interior render
the Dome of the Rock an architectural
wonder, and the religious relics therein
- such as the Rock of Abraham - make it
the third holiest Muslim site in the
world.
Tabasco Tea Room
A day of exploring Jerusalem's bounty of
religious sights will work up anybody's
thirst, and the Tabasco Tea Room,
with two happy hours per night and a
drink-all-you-can Friday for three
dollars, is one of the best places to
imbibe.
Wailing Wall
For many Jews, praying before the
Wailing Wall - believed to be the only
surviving remnant of the Second Temple -
is a right whose significance cannot be
overestimated.
Church of the Holy Sepulchre
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, whose
grounds contain the places where Christ
was crucified, buried and resurrected,
is the holiest of holy sites in the
Christian world - a fact which explains
the ceaseless waves of tourists and
pilgrims that flood the vaults.
Temple Mount Excavations
The vast maze of the Temple Mount
Excavations encompasses the whole of
Jerusalem's turbulent history within its
area; archeologists have uncovered
mosaic floors, arches and other relics
dating as far back as the tenth century
BC, the time of Solomon.
Mount of Olives
Rising up just east of the Old City, the
Mount of Olives is said to be dotted
with more significant churches and
shrines than olive trees - among the
highlights is the Chapel of the
Ascension, which rests on the spot where,
according to gospel, Christ was carried
up to heaven.
Armenian Tavern
The Armenian Tavern boasts
beautiful decor, a trendy clientele and
a kitchen renowned for its delicious
traditional dishes like stuffed vine
leaves and spicy sausages. |
